My progress

How is your shoot progressing?

My progress is slow but moving i have taken a few images but not as many as I would like to. I have try 2 different styles one being popping bubbles and the other being water balloon. for the water balloon we had problems surrounding the shutter speed and the focus. We had to change the the shutter speed multiple times as it could not be to fast of to slow due to capturing the image at the right time. The focus was hard as auto focus would not focus on the balloon but would on the bubbles and manual focus would not work on the bubbles but has helpful on the water balloons.

What are some of the strengths?

Some of my strengths is setting the aperture and capturing the image at a good height.the image bellow is an example of an image I have taken. The strengths on that specific image is the focus and time was spot on.

What are some weaknesses?

I am overall happy with the image but I could work on have less hands in the shot created as more crowded image.I could of worked on focus of the water droplets as having them in focus will create more depth of field.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 00001.jpg

Why have you chosen the exposure settings and lighting?

I have chosen and ISO of 800 as the room we were shooting in was dark even with the box lights we had. I had an aperture of 5.6 to to create a blurred background and a focused foreground creating a shallow depth of field. I had a shutter speed of 1/500 of a second as we need to capture the image a the right time and get the balloon frozen in time. if giving the chance to change one thing about the image i would change the background colour to black as it makes the colour stand out more. I am over all happy with the image and have learnt a lot.

Freeze frame ideas

This freeze frame image of a balloon is an image I would love to attempt. The focus point of the image for me is the red balloon that is shrinking after being popped.

Things needed:

balloon, camera, tripod, plastic protection (freeze bag, gladwrap…), pin or needle.

I would give myself a hour to take and setup for the shot and then an another hour for editing and post production.

The exposure setting for this image would be a fast shutter speed my guess would be above 1/200th of a second. The aperture setting would be above a F8 to keep all aspects of the image sharp. I believed that the would of been an iso of 400 up as it look as if it was shot in a darker room. A flash or lights would of been used to has less shadowing and to make the water more seen. Over all I believe that this is and achievable image to attempt in the time iI have.

I would love to attempt to take this image as the reflection idea intrest me. Having the reflection on the bubble can be taken to your advantages as you can create an extra element to the image.

Things needed

camera, bubbles, possibly a tripod

This project would be very achievable as you can complete in an hour and only need a few resources. I would give myself an hour but most likely won’t need the whole hour. I will also have a hour for post production.

The exposure setting for this image would be a fast shutter speed with a 1/200th of a second or above. The aperture setting would be around a F1.4 as you want all focus on the bubble and have a blurred background. I believed that the would of been an iso of 200 as it was shot outside with lots of light. Over all I believe that this is and achievable image to attempt with the time restrictions I have.

Another image I that i am inspired by is the concept of smashing plate or ceramic items. the focus point for image is the shattered jar. Having the white background makes the colours on the jar pieces brighter.

The camera setting for this image would of been a aputer of f16 or higher to create a sharp foreground and background. There would of been a high shutter speed and a low iso as its has no noise.

The image above has a simple yet effective technique. The lemon slice creates a an air pocket that is try to escape to the surface creating a focus point. Having the black background makes the yellow brighter and more appealing.

I believe that there would of been an aperture of f8 or around. The shutter speed I believe would’ve been around 1/200th. I believe that there was a low iso as the is no noise. I believe that the way the shot was takes was in a dark room with a camera flash to create the effect.

Evaluation

In this blog i will be comparing my first and second grade projects.

For my first graded project I created a time lapse of a candle that burnt for around 45 minutes which worked out perfectly for the time left of my hour period. The lighting, exposure and time lapse techniques use were effectively in order to attract an audience.

I have the focus point on the candle as it burns down. The time-lapse came out to a total of 10 second which was the requirement for the task . I had the frame per second set at thirty per second. I had an end total of 633 pictures with a three second interval. The problem I had occur with in the time lapse was blurred appearance of the candle and wasted opportunity . The candle had been made at home and the appearance was not pleasing to the eye and had many parts of aluminum foil in it. I had set ISO to 100, aperture to 10 and shutter speed to 1/4 of a second. The ISO and aperture I am happy with but the shutter speed could have been faster which could have been a factor contributing blur within the time lapse. Overall I am happy with the time lapse and would make small changes for next time. I had artificial lights to brighten the candle as the flame only lit a small area. It made the candle more vibrant and made it easier to edit as the shadows were minimal.

I have recently just finished my final assessment for the year/term. As it was my final I decided to attempt a big project for myself as I am still inexperienced and learning. I created a time lapse of a me preparing via cutting and pining fabric for a pencil case as well as sewing.

The lighting, exposure and time lapse techniques use were more effective than the first time lapse as it attracts an audience successfully. I have the focus point on the fabric for the first time-lapse and the second on the sewing material . The time-lapse came out to a total of 25 seconds which was slightly longer than the requirement for the task . I had the frame per second set at thirty per second. I had an end total of 572 pictures with a three second interval. The problem I had occur with in the time lapse was the motion blur as I moved to complete tasks.I had set ISO to 400, aperture to 7.1 and shutter speed to 1/50th of a second. The ISO and aperture I am happy with but the shutter speed could have been faster which would be the factor contributing blur within the time lapse. Overall I am extremely happy with the time lapse and would make small changes for next time.

Comparing the techniques that were used to appeal to audience I believe that the second time lapse was more effective and appealing to an audience as it was focused and more aesthetically appealing. If the candle was smooth or did not have foil in it it would of been a better time lapse. I am proud of my development over the term as I started having no clue what i was doing and fished with a fully complete time lapse displaying all my skills.

My Progress

I have completed three time lapses in the six available weeks. I have come across a handful of problems. These include shadow coming and going, blur in pictures and interference of other intervalometers. The ways I have reduced the chance of theses recurring during filming is to ensure I film in fully shaded areas, gaining others opinion on whether its blurry or not and having a large area between intervalometers. I have experimented trying different focuses some of these are ice poles, ice cream and candles. For my first graded project I created a time lapse of a candle that burnt for around 45 minutes which worked out perfectly for the time left of my hour period. I have the focus point on the candle as it burns down. The time-lapse came out to a total of 10 second which was the requirement for the task . I had the frame per second set at thirty per second. I had an end total of 633 pictures with a three second interval. The problem I had occur with in the time lapse was blur appearance of the candle and wasted opportunity . I was rushing to film and forgot to have another student check whether it was focused or not and did not find out that it was blurred till post production. The candle had been made at home and the apprentice was not pleasing to the eye and had many parts of aluminum foil in it. While the candle was burning the was wax melting off the side down the jar it was placed on which would have been a opportunity to take a second time lapse.

I have begun a new time-lapse with the hopes to complete a time-lapse of me sewing a pencil case. I have two parts to the time-lapse. Part one being me preparing to sew e.g. cutting the fabric and pinning them together to sew. Part two is me sewing the pencil case together on the sewing machine.

Stay tuned as I post more blogs and videos!

time-lapse photographer -Terje Sørgjerd

Mr. TSO is a passionate landscape photographer and filmmaker from Norway. His many point of focus for each video is the movement in landscapes and nature. My interest of his time-lapse are the beautiful scenery and the point of focus in the nature. One of my favorite time-lapse of his is one he did of a small waterfall. Filmed in August 2011 it is an older time-lapse but is still beautiful.Captured in fjord landscape in Western Norway the hidden streams or dwarfish waterfalls creates the perfected place for a time-lapse. The effect he gave it is the motion blur of the water flowing over the smooth light grey rocks.

Task 1 Ideas

The point of interest to me is the candle refection on the mirror as it create more of an interest onto the candle burning. As of the black background makes the colouring of the candle brighter and more appealing to the eye. For this time-lapse to work we will have to set up at the the start of lunch to ensure that we will have a whole hour to film the time-lapse. As candle can be unpredictable on the time it will take to burn we may need to cut short the burning but have solution to the problem e.g.  film the time lapse over more time (starting at the start of school(8:15) and then continuing through to recess(10:15) ). The location will be in the corner of the class room with a black backdrop.

The point of interest for this video is the ghost appearance of the people walking through the. Due to the fast moments of people a motion blur is created giving the ghost like appearance. For this to be achievable you would need a one second interval between each shot to have more smooth movements. The shooting would have to be either during a sport lesson or at lunch. Filming during lunch will have less time and less images creating a short time-lapse but shooting it with hour lesson I can get plenty of pictures for a longer video. This can be achievable but will need a lot of planning for positioning time and place.

Shutter speed, Aperture, and ISO

Shutter speed is the length of time camera shutter is open, exposing light onto the camera sensor. A longer shutter will create motion blur and a faster shutter speed will create a still clear image. a fast shutter speed will let less light (good for thing outside or fast moving) in while a slower shutter will let more light (good for taking photos at night)

Aperture is the opening in the lens which light passes to enter the camera. A way to think about it is how your eyes work. As you move between bright and dark places, the iris in your eyes either expands or shrinks, controlling the size of your pupil. A wide aperture will create a blurred background while focusing on the foreground while a small/narrow aperture will focus on the fore and background.

Image result for what is aperture

ISO is a camera setting that will brighten or darken a photo. A higher ISO will create a brighter image while a lower ISO will create a darker image. But as you increase the ISO the image will become grainy also known as noise. Adjusting the ISO is best recommended to use when shutter speed and aperture are unable to be adjusted.
